Over 90 Join Senator to Attend Soccer Meeting
The Greater Harford soccer community came out in force last Thursday [1/6/05] evening for the first in a series of presentations to further promote interest in the Greater Harford Soccer Park project and in growing the sport overall to include coaching and player development. This time soccer people came to Abington Fire Hall to hear Mr. Jerry May, Executive Director for the Maryland State Youth Soccer Association [MSYSA], and Mr. Graham Ramsay, the association’s director of education and training.
The evening’s program kicked-off with a “power point” presentation by Dr. Jeff Hess, Chair of the Soccer Park Board, on the development of a major regional soccer center in Harford County. His presentation clearly described the project site plan with some recent revisions that now incorporate an expanded training component with lighting and synthetic surfaces. He reported that phase #1 towards moving the project forward remains the acquisition of 56 acres of land off of Carsins’ Run Road in Aberdeen. Additionally, the Park Board planning committee made copies of the project feasibility assessment to all those attending.
After the descriptive slide presentation, Dr. Hess introduced May who talked about the importance of creating quality soccer fields in the State, field facilities that are needed to better serve the 60,000+ youth soccer players which fall under his statewide administration; an estimated 10,000 residing in Harford County.
May was accompanied by Graham Ramsey, who spoke about the uniqueness of the GHSP, that it is being presented both as a major playing center destination, as well a major regional, indeed national, training center. American soccer needs an East Coast training center. Ramsey has been an ambassador for the sport, being one of America’s premier clinicians since the late 60’s.
Senator Bob Hooper, who represents the State’s-35th Senate District, a former pro soccer player himself, attended the session to lend his support for the work of the Soccer Club and the Soccer Park Board. He and Ramsey hit it off, informally talking about the earlier days in soccer in and around the Greater Baltimore area. Their paths had probably crossed over the years, in that they had been a part of many soccer events and had mutual friends in the sport.
